Alzheimer's Medication

Although there is no known cure yet for Alzheimer's disease, a number of drugs are available that can help slow down a patient's cognitive deterioration.

The main aim of these medications is to try and reform logical ability or the person's comprehension to project, perceive, judge and recognisation. Five drugs are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Research is constant and many different tests have been regularly being done. These medications may not have the same effects for all patients but they can have significant effects. The following products have to be considered for treatments.

The 5 FDA Approved Medications are:

  • Namenda
  • Aricept
  • Cognex
  • Exelon
  • Razadyne

The first four drugs listed above belong to a group of drugs known as Cholinesterase Inhibitors. They work by trying to delay the destruction of a substance known as acetylcholine, which helps bridging communication between nerve cells, and has an essential role in a person's memory.

Nameda acts on a neurotransmitter called glutamate and protects the brain from it.
This substance destroys the brain cells of patients. This drug is more effective in treating moderate to severe forms of Alzheimer's disease, improving the daily life of the person. The most common side effects associated with Nameda are dizziness, confusion, constipation, headache and rashes. Other less common side effects are tiredness, back pain, high blood pressure, insomnia, hallucinations, vomits and occasional breath shortness.

The drugs Aricept, Exelon and Razadyne are effective in treating early stages of Alzheimer's, reducing special behavioral issues. Significant ameliorations in quality of life has been shown, but these medications have less effect in slowing down the degeneration of a patient's logical abilities. Some side effects have been observed which are not eaqual for all patients. Common side effects observed in patients using Aricept are nausea, excessive tiredness, sleeping problems and tension cramps. Less frequent effects are headaches and dizziness; rare cases of anorexia, gastric or duodenal ulcers, gastro - intestinal hemorrhages, bladder overflow obstruction, liver damage, convulsions, heart problems and psychiatric disturbances.

Exelon side effects are nausea, vomiting, weight loss, stomach problems. Less usual are abdominal pain, sweating, diarrhea, headaches, tremor, and psychiatric disturbances. Rare cases of patients with gastro - intestinal bleeding have been observed.

Cognex is the less frequently used medication Side effects are nausea and vomiting. Some patients may also experience some abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, rapid breathing, increased urination, insomnia, runny nose, swelling in legs and feet. Some of the most severe ones are liver damage, affection problems and seizures.

Razadyne side effects are not that strong: nausea, vomiting and weight loss. Less common are fatigue, dizziness, tremor, headaches, anxiety, urinary infection, blood in urine, runny nose. There are no serious side effects with this drug.

Constant studies and researches are made to help Alzheimer's patients. New medications have been tested, and hope mustn’t be abandoned, even in finding an efficient and definitive cure to this terrible disease.
