Food Allergy Treatment

Allergies are for most of them caused by food.

When the allergen (the one that causes allergic reactions) has been recognized thanks to different techniques, the patient has to definitely eradicate it from his or her diet, and also carefully analyze food labels and food products.
Another daily life restriction is to be very careful when eating out.

All this caution is due to the fact that allergic reactions can be caused with a very small amount of allergens and  can cause major symptoms.

Self - awareness is very important. Anybody has to know what component is causing such reactions.

A physician can be a big help in making up a management plan for allergy. Then food labels have to be checked for possible allergens included in the ingredients. And when eating outs or at friends or relatives, the best is to inquire about the ingredients of the meal.

Another precautionary measure, especially for those who have severe allergic symptoms, is wearing necklaces or bracelets provided by a medical service to alert other people about your allergies in case of an accident, for example, in case of state of unconsciousness.

Some patients are advised to constantly bring with them epinephrine self – injections doses which are prescribed by their physicians, who will teach them how to self - administer the medication during an episode of allergic reaction.

If symptoms seem to be getting strong, emergencies should be called to help transport the individual to the nearest hospital.

Other than epinephrine injections, there are still other medications that can be prescribed by the doctor to deal with allergic reactions to food. These drugs would include bronchodilators, antihistamines, and corticosteroids.

  • Bronchodilators relieve symptoms that are associated with difficulty of breathing. Its aim is to dilate the bronchial passageways of the respiratory tract that have turn out inflamed, and eventually helps the patient breathing normally.

  • Antihistamines relieve from symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, hives, rashes, and gastrointestinal discomforts. They can be available in syrup or chewable tablet for easy use when a sudden allergic attack occurs.

  • Corticosteroids are a big help in case of skin irritations.

Other new kinds of treatments have being tested for a few years, like desensitization which is administering injections of small amounts of the food allergen to the patient.
This treatment claims that it can eventually make the patient endure the food allergen in the long run.
Another is putting a diluted amount of the food allergen underneath the tongue thirty minutes before the food intake.

Many studies show that there is no cure to food allergies. But at least there are ways to help decreasing the symptoms of allergic reactions.
