Health Supplements

As a European, when
visiting the United States, I am always stroke by a now regular habit
that you can see in the majority of American homes.
Health supplements are
taken here as we, Europeans, have a piece of bread to eat with a meal.
When I am asking about this almost consecrated daily action, I have to
admit that most of the time, I get honest answers.
Here is a summary of different people opinions:
As I have a very occupied
and stressful life, I don't have time to lead a healthy life: my diet is
reduced to irregular meals and munching snacks here and there. And as I come back home every night in a dreadful
state, I don't even want to think about cooking... and even less doing
sport.
I can feel and see that this way of life is very harmful to my health.
So, I fall back on health
supplements to compensate the missing part of my alimentation.

This looks understandable.
Well, just to a certain point though.
The subject here is not to
buy a service or a product like any other consumption good... we are
talking about health and taking medication. And even natural, any ingested
tablet or capsule has an effect on metabolism.
In this country, all the
medicines that can be obtained by self-prescription are kind of easy to get.
These products, vitamin cocktails, health supplements and even painkillers-
that can have a very strong active principle- are self service
available.
Therefore, the effect’s level of these items on the consumer's health is
not that visible.
There are so easily available, without talking to a professional, that
people don't have any consciousness of the consequences on their health.
Most of the time, these pills and tablets are available on the supermarket's
shelves as any other consumption goods, next to the tooth pasts, not that
far from the cereals.
You must be aware that most
health supplements are meant to have an effect on you, even natural or
organic.
Before any purchase, ask the shop tender.
If it is a natural products outlet, I don't think it could give any good
help: neither diploma nor knowledge is requested to open this kind of
business.
I would rather recommend to look for advice in a pharmacy or at pharmacy’s
desk of your supermarket.
The best would be to get
information from a general practitioner: the trustful relationship you have
with him or she is a good point, and you surely couldn't expect any fake
money interested answer.
Here is a list of questions
you have to ask yourself before taking any health supplement:
-
Do you know well your
metabolism specificities? Certain components of a medicine can affect you
more or less than the average of the patients.
-
Are you allergic to certain
substances or plants?
-
Do you take regularly a
medication?
So get the information about possible interactions with one or several
ingredients that compose the supplement you have chosen.
-
Have the health supplements
you’ve chosen been tested and passed the government health
agreement?
You will have the bad surprised that most items of these "health”
range haven’t... simply because there are not considered as medicines...
but they can affect your health.
I don’t want to say that
all health supplements are bad.
I just want to warn that these products are not that innocent. They have
active principles and therefore have an effect on you. |
