Medias & Eating Disorders
|
|
America is not the only
country with diet issues. This same dilemma is spread throughout the
entire world.
For example, obesity is a
very big problem here. But slowly it is extending to all occidental
countries.
Although being overweight is definitely a common issue in the states,
eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are also quite
prevalent.
Where does come this trend from? |
When health experts talk
about it, we mainly can hear that the media is the major problem.
Whether it is television, film, fashion shows, magazines, or music videos,
all protagonists are skinny folks.
And as they are perceived as examples, the youngsters want to look the same.
But skinny doesn't necessarily mean beautiful and surely not healthy.
But let's face the reality:
individuals, especially young girls, are trapped and obsessed by
appearances. Considered as the main aim of their life, being good looking -
well, from their point of view- make them fall in excesses that can be
harmful for their health.
I personally blame the media because they feed into it so extremely.font>
Shows like "America's
Next Top Model" are always pointing out average to slim girls and
calling them fat. They just did this on the last season with one of the
contestants. Even a designer said she was overweight. This sends a terrible
message to women everywhere.
The media, after all, is such a powerful tool. Letting your kids watch it
can sadly damage their confidence; hence the numerous eating disorders
treatment clinics.
Many girls end up like big
health issues. Suddenly they're stuck in eating disorders treatment clinics
and having trouble consuming anything. This is basically like a
disease.
The effects of anorexia are
serious – more serious by far than the effects of overeating.
Ironically, in the quest to look skinny and beautiful, thousands of women
every year destroy their health.
Apparently what we need is
more eating disorders treatment information in circulation. This way, people
can get helped. They can get aware about the danger of risky habits before
they fall into a never-ending circle, or, if too late, be assisted to get
out of it.
